All about me....

Post  Admin on Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:06 pm

Well, currently I am known as "Admin" on these forums.. that's only because I haven't worked out how to change my forum title yet, trust me I am working on it I don't want to be known as Admin!

I am one of two people who decided to build www.isourcetextures.com. My name is ELizabeth Gallagher and I am from the UK. ( Lancashire )

I have been working in the commercial game texture creation field for over 5 years.
I own TRU Graphic Designs Ltd www.texturesrus.net which is a co-op of artists both professional and enthusiasts who create and sell seamless game textures for use within Secondlife.com

I am a self taught photoshop user but in all honesty would admit that only in the last 18 months my artwork was good enough to feel proud to display.
That said, in another few years I will undoubtedly look at the work I do now and cringe. Thats fairly normal I think.

Second Life was the start of a journey that lead me to here.. so it's only fair I explain that journey...

I landed in Second Life with no knowledge of textures, graphics, copyright, IP or anything linked to such things and have stumbled and staggered along a rocky path of discovery.

My "real life" working background was in sales and marketing which I was very successful at but I worked harder than was normal and pushed myself too much and I eventually got sick with M.E ( Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ) and had to leave my job in 2000.

I spent 3 years playing online games during the days ( and nights ) as my health kept me practically house bound and my then husband was at work all day.

I started playing The Sims PC game for 12 months and loved it, then EA Games brought out TSO ( The Sims Online ) a place were the avatars that were once only NPCs ( None playing characters ) actually had real people puppeting them from their PCs from all over the world...back then, this was very exciting and a new concept to gaming, to me at least... for avatars to actually have a real person behind them! affraid

I spent 2 years at TSO and had a lot of fun indeed and met some great people. I learnt how to "chat" using the "omg, brb, AFK" chats that most people use today, ( interesting observation.. I saw an advert for KitKat recently with OMG used as the logo... my marketing mind was smiling at how chat abreviations have developed over the last 10 years. These commonly used chat words are well recognised by the the younger generation, even if they don't do much internet chatting, they use them in SMS/texts on their cell phones.. 10 years ago it was a language only geeks used.. times have changed )

I then found www.there.com and spent 9 months of yet another revelation .. it was here that I discovered people could make money from these virtual worlds that used game currency which had a real value... People were buying and selling virtual land or homes and houses or by creating clothing, hair and accessories for the avatars.. I dabbled in the virtual land business just before There.com released 200 new houses which caused a crash in that particular market as it caused a major price/value drop in the small amount of homes once available.

I noticed people were making game currency by buying and selling on the in game auctions. So they would buy an item cheap and sell it at a higher price.

People wanted to buy new designs and in world objects in There.com but didn't always have the funds... so I opened a virtual pawn shop called There Pawn Brokers lol.. I would buy things from someones inventory for instant bucks and sell them on the auctions and make a profit ( usually) ... there may well be a website still around named There Pawn Brokers.. I still get IMs now and again begging me to buy their buggy for money and I haven't logged in for 5 years!

There.com was a hoot but it had a short shelf life. Once you have raced buggies, and seen all there is to see it gets a bit dull.

It was around this time, people in There.com were talking about Second Life, and what the differences were between the two virtual worlds...the general feeling was There.com was more social and Second Life was more suited to the creative types.

Linden Labs who created Second Life managed to get hold of the customer database of There.com and emailed us spam email offering a free Second Life account. ( before they decided to open the flood gates and offer anyone and everyone a free account ) So I created an account.

You were offered a list of surnames.. I saw "Filth" and thought it was funny and my first name Lillybeth was the name my mum used to call me as a child.

I didn't think I would be sticking with Second Life, it had just come out of beta in 2003 and the avatars back then were ugly, we walked like ducks and the place seemed so big and deserted.. was rare to see anyone else as you explored.

For 3 months I logged in and out of Second Life and There.com and eventually Second Life "clicked" The userface was technical by most peoples standards, and it certainly took me a while to get the hang of it..

Eventually, I found myself feeling more "at home" at SL and managed to drag some of my friends from There.com over.

In 2004 I set up a tiny low quality texture store up. I had seen other texture stores and one in particular doing very well and decided it was the easiest thing to do if you didn't have any outside software experience such as Photoshop, (and I didn't) and wanted to make a little game currency to avoid having to buy it with real money.

That tiny store has developed into a huge store with over 80 artists and 80,000 textures. I personally have grown as an artists and business owner acting as an agent for several professional texture companies on the Internet selling their commercial textures inside SL to content creators.

Martin ( the other partner of isourcetextures ) is also a texture artists in SL and that's how we met.

We and others had been struggling to find legal quality images on the net that could be used as derivatives in our game textures. 5 years ago there simply wasn't anything at all. Sure, there were stock sites but they catered more for magazines, books and advertising companies and as a result of that their stock was expensive and the user license very restrictive for commercial electronic distribution.

Today, there is a hand full of good sites but only one that allows commercial distribution of your artwork using derivatives from their photo stock ... and now there is www.isourcetexures.com Very Happy

It was kind of forced that if I wanted to make textures with stock/photos that allowed commercial use, I had to take my own photos.

I bought my first professional camera 2 years ago and started taking my own shots.
Martin had been taking his own shots for some time.

One day we got talking about the lack of good photo stock available to commercial texture artists and both admitted we were planning on starting a texture stock site offering our own textures. We decided rather than competing against each other we should do it together.. and so here we are today. Razz

Whether it will be a success is anyone's guess.. it took two years before TRU became successful.

The reality was never as easy as the dream.. success in life, real or virtual happens easy or overnight.

It takes a lot of time and equal amounts of hard work. You will make mistakes and if your wise you will learn from them and become a stronger and better business person.

So, now I am both a photographer and a texture artist like Martin so we can see both sides of the fence so to speak.. and we hope that will serve us well in this new adventure.

I am also a freelance game artist and had my first acceptance of some brass headboard textures for a game console game due to be released in 2010.

So, that's my life story in a (coco) nut shell.. but I hope it at least gives you some idea of who I am , where I came from and where I am hoping to go...if nothing else.

I'll stop now ( if you haven't already! Laughing ) thanks for reading... and if you have joined the isource forums.. please don't feel you have to blabber on quite as much as I have! .. but please do say hello and tell us a little about yourself.. we all have a life that may seem boring to ourselves but more often than not what you reveal about yourself, other people can relate to and by default that makes your life interesting Smile

Peace flower

Hello and Thank you for accepting my registration here to this forum.

I really enjoyed reading your post Lillybeth Filth/Admin.
Before I ever owned a pc I was an Artist. I did Pen & Ink mostly but I also did Acrylic Murals occasionally. The urge of creativity in me has been there for over 40 years. When I bought my first pc about 5 years ago it came with a Bryce program that was alot of fun. Soon I bought a cool First Person Shooter game and I remember the thing that really interested me about it was the textures. I wanted to know how they did it.
After playing single player for awhile I decided to try multiplayer. I soon met some good friends and we passed info back and forth and started modding and mapping the game. We started making wac files and made it rain and snow on our maps as well as made the clouds move and earthquakes.
About a year or so ago I was contacted by an old friend and he told me about Second Life. So I tried it.
The first 15 minutes or so of looking goofy and walking funny made me dicide to hmmm, I dont know about this. lol.
Well long story short, I soon realized that you could build stuff. I went on everyday and practiced building and then I found out about texturing.
To me, it doesnt matter what you build. If the texture is a good one the whole build benefits. If the texture is less than convincing,
then it makes a normally good build look cartoony.

I have visited TRU many times. I allways find what I'm looking for. Excellent store with excellent customer support. As a matter of fact, while browsing TRU a few months back, I remember talking to you about some castle wall textures for an outside pavillion kind of thing I was making and you came back with a whole set of textures and gave them to me. Actually you gave me two different sets. I am very thankful for your generosity and your genuine help that day.
I admire your endeavors in texturing and providing others with good quality textures, and its good to see you are sucessful at doing something that you love to do. You are an Artist in all sence of the word. Sometimes it seems people dont notice, or appreciate all that you do. It can make you discouraged sometimes, but let me tell you that your actions that day helped inspire me to make castle building my primary objective because you treated me not as a newb but as a bona fide castle builder.
There are some really incredible castle builders in Second Life and I have set my goals to be as good if not better than they are.

I took a break for a couple of weeks and went back to my old FPS haunts and started mapping again...but soon got bored with the inability to texture or create buildings and items on the servers.
I have been back to SL for about a month now and decided to go back into my favorite passtime of creating realistic Castles. I have made several in the past, but I am presently almost done with my first one for sale. I have most of it linked and cant wait to try out the unpacker.
Textures to me are really important. I am on the lookout constantly for the most realistic textures I can find. I am just a beginner in Gimp, and Paintnet.
I have a texture maker but have no idea how to use it..yet. I also have Zbrush and 3dmax but I still need to watch some tutorials on those to be able to use them.
I get alot of compliments on my builds and it makes me feel good.
It all goes back to the beginning when I first wanted to know " how they did it."

Again, thanx for all you do, santa

Hello CJ and welcome to isource, you are the first person to leave a post here that wasn't written by me or Koba! lol

I really enjoyed reading your post Lillybeth Filth/Admin.

Please, call me Liz Smile

That sounds cool. I wouldnt have a clue how to mod games or add rain etc, what game were you playing?

About a year or so ago I was contacted by an old friend and he told me about Second Life. So I tried it.

Yep, I reckon the conversion rate of noobs to long term users in SL is probably 1 in 10, I think I mentioned in another post that my first 3 months of SL was me just getting the hang of the interface. Even now I feel most people who try SL are put off by the interface. Of course once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. Now and again i will talk to someone very new to SL and as they struggle with walking or trying to look at something not immediatly in their avatars field of vision takes me back to my early days. Its very easy to forget how those same things were difficult for us when we were new.
LL need to make the interface for user friendly. A good example of a social network that is a huge success is Facebook. Facebook is a primitive version of SL if you think about it. Already people are creating avatar type images in a bid to create an identity, and buying "gifts" for $1.00 which are just small cartoon images of a birthday cake or a rose are the start of a facebook economy.
The people who use facebook or myspace are SL's target market really, it won't be long before these same people extend their facebook profiles to some 3D environment were they can log in from their profile and have some place they call home were people from their friends list can come and visit and listen to music or watch movies together.

I doubt SL will be that 3D environment but I am willing to bet someone somewhere is creating an "add on" to facebook which allows people to "avatarise" themselves and buy clothes and avatar equiptment.

Facebook users are the children of the virtual world to come imo, they just need to take that next step.

Most ppl on facebook still think SL is for nerds or computer geeks when really they are doing exactly the same things ppl do in SL only on a much more basic level.

I do not recall that story but dont be offended my memory sucks. One weakness I have is not being able to remember SL names! But I am glad I left a positive impression on you and I hope the castle textures were of some use. Maybe I "do" recall it, was you looking for turrets? I remember making some plain walls with and without turrets some were made of stone, others just plain.
If that was you, those very same textures are popular at TRU so I thank you for the inspiration! Smile

I thank you also for taking the time to say such kind words. In a fast paced enviro like SL more people tend to "grab and go" and only come back to you if there was a problem! :

So once again thank you, it means so much. ( I was showing my boyfriend your post because it was very touching indeed )

I admire your endeavors in texturing and providing others with good quality textures, and its good to see you are sucessful at doing something that you love to do.

I do love what I do. But like anything its all a learning curve. I came into SL with no exp in Photoshop and even today I only know and understand a small % of the program. I recall the frustration of trying to work with alpha layers! Thats the one issue most ppl get stuck at when using Photoshop. Thankfully, there was and still is a ton of tutorials on SL forums and that's how I made my first step to creating the textures I make today. When I was new, SL was a much different place. The skills we had were limited in all areas of content creation.

Thank you Smile but honestly there are much better texture artists than me in SL and beyond, by definition I am still a noob to professional game artists.

There are some really incredible castle builders in Second Life and I have set my goals to be as good if not better than they are.

Yes, its always good to have inspiration and goals. Improving your skill to the standards of people you admire is vital. There will always be people that are better than you in what ever you do. But equally there are also people with lesser talent than yourself. Its all relative. We have a lot of castle textures here on isource because me and Koba live in England so theres a castle on every street corner almost!

I took a break for a couple of weeks and went back to my old FPS haunts and started mapping again...but soon got bored with the inability to texture or create buildings and items on the servers.

Its just a matter of time and patience and the desire to succeed. You can try creating some textures from our texture stock here. It costs you nothing to download the free lower resolution textures and their size is big enough to SL use.

I have a texture maker but have no idea how to use it..yet. I also have Zbrush and 3dmax but I still need to watch some tutorials on those to be able to use them.
I get alot of compliments on my builds and it makes me feel good.

WOW Zbrush and 3DMax! I am out of my comfort zone !

I have Texture Maker too and I havent made anything with it ( had it for 3 years ) I dont really like the procedural texture makers, as they are "photo realistic" (cartoony )
I prefer to work with photographs. That said, some base textures from Genetica are very good indeed ( they are shown on the website and are there to modify if you own Genetica) but it would take me months if not years to get used to that application. And as Texture Maker still sits on my desktop unused, I decided to stick to what I know that being Photoshop.

It all goes back to the beginning when I first wanted to know " how they did it."

Again, thanx for all you do, santa

Thank you too! And hope you have a great Chistmas!

Thank you Liz,

lol, I had a feeling your reply would be more than a word or two. lol!

Yes your memory serves you well! That was me. I havent had a chance to use those textures yet, as I have been working on darker more masculine projects so far. But I will be using them on a future castle that I want to do that will be more of a fairy tale kind of castle.

The game I modded and mapped was by Novalogic called Delta Force Extreme. There's a MapEditor built into it that uses a terrain grid and you pick your buildings or items and place them on a predetermined terrain. But when you want to check your work, you have to save, then log onto the game and run a locked server to see how its all coming together. Needless to say theres usually a building or a vehicle up in the air or at the bottom of a lake that I need to fix. lol. The weather wac files were very similar to "scripts". You can add birds sounds, thunder and flashing lightning, snow etc. I had the first map on the demo version years ago that had fast moving clouds and an earthquake.
( scared the @$%^# outta some people lol)

I feel the same way about Texturemaker. I dont have Photoshop yet, but will soon get it. I am a newb with this stuff and have been putting off learning it for too long. Now I hafta learn it!
I just recently figured out how to make a transparency on an image using Gimp. I used the Paint.net program to color the area first with white, then opened it in Gimp and used the fuzzy tool to add transparency. I then changed it to a tga file and it worked!..kinda... Im not real good at making a clean edge. Also it seemed to be fuzzy so I deff got along way to go yet. I am using images from here. I especially love the windows and arches you have here.

I was born in Swindon on a military base. My Father was in the US Army Corp of Engineers. My Mother is English. When I was young I played in an old ruin in Bishops Waltham. I still to this day am fascinated with old Castles and Cathedrals of England. Your very fortunate to have access to all that.
I got a big ole ocean in my way so I have to use the internet. lol

Thanks so much for putting up this great site! You have alot of really good and clear images.
I have you guy's on my favorites and will be visiting alot.

Take care and enjoy the Holiday's,

I checked out the video link.. its mind blowing isnt it.. I have no idea how they create something so complex other than its all made with 3D applications and animation software.. its an area I have wanted to really get into for some time but as soon as I open Blender up my mind goes blank! lol!

He looks like Spok ( spelling? ) the character

Merry Xmas ! santa

I'm not sure, but I think they used Maya and maybe some other programs. I love the textures
they use for the interior scenes. Very convincing.
I have Maya but I have along way to go with that one. I'm still learning photoshop! scratch

Its very frustrating, I have all these ideas in my head, but since I'm new to CG I have all this stuff
to learn first b4 I can convey them.
I have decided to transition my web page away from a clan/squad site &
more towards CG, and CG programs. I will still keep the gaming, but add a creativity side to it as well.
I'm going to be adding tutorials and links to the different program threads and hope maybe eventually
be a resource for others to go to and learn. (I still have alot to do in that area too tho.)
I will be coming here often and asking questions etc and hopefully help boost your membership here as well.
Years ago I had a different site, but this one is relatively new. So since its gotten somewhat slow
and seems abandoned at times, I feel right now is a good time to change things a bit.
